The Swindon & Cricklade Railway has announced the appointment of Michael Abbott as its new chairman and Bradley Robinson as its vice-chair, who together have a combined age of 51 but bring a wealth of experience to the railway.
Michael Abbott is the railway’s youngest Chairman in recent history and has a passion for heritage preservation. With a commitment to integrity and a fresh perspective, in the ever-changing heritage railway sector Michael is looking to lead the railway into an era of adaptive growth.
As its youngest Chairman for a long time, Michael is well-placed to bring a different outlook to the railway and is well-placed to embrace the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving world. He also recognises that the heritage railway sector needs to adapt, and aims to foster innovation, sustainability, and diversity.
Michael said “I am humbled and honoured to serve as the Chairman of the Swindon & Cricklade Railway. With unwavering dedication, I pledge to lead with integrity, aiming to navigate the challenges we face while ensuring our commitment to preserving the railway’s heritage.
“The Swindon & Cricklade Railway, like many heritage railways, has felt the impact of recent global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the cost of living crisis. Recognising the need to address these challenges head-on, I will actively work with the board of trustees, volunteers, members and visitors and embrace innovative approaches to ensure stability and success for many years to come.
“The Swindon & Cricklade Railway has long been cherished by locals and visitors alike, providing a cultural experience and educational opportunities. I aim to enhance the railway’s offerings, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a memorable and immersive journey through Swindon’s railway heritage while staying relevant in a rapidly evolving world.”
One of the challenges that Michael will have to face is the problem of security on the railway, to which end it has recently hired a security firm.
New trustees Paul Hanselman, Paul Logan, Tony Shale, and Nigel Willoughby have also been appointed, and they will be supported by the current trustees Bill Poling, Bill Daly, and Ken Goodwin.
