Rail operator Northern has asked staff members to pick their favourite rail routes to work on, the results of which are below:

Middlesborough to Whitby

This journey begins at the industrial town of Middlesborough and makes its way across the stunning North Yorkshire Moors National Park with its incredible views, rolling hills and historic woodland, not to mention breathtaking coastal scenes.

This route is wonderful for day trips or for those who want to get out and about exploring the impressive coastline alongside the region’s wonderful heritage.

Cumbria Coast

This breathtaking journey is from Barrow to Carlisle and winds its way through the Lake District, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering tranquil lakes, striking hills and mountains and delightful villages. This route offers an array of stunning panoramic views, making for a wonderful journey.

Furness Line

This lesser-known route makes its way through picturesque countryside with beautiful rolling hills and Morecambe Bay’s staggering coastline and also treats passengers to spectacular views of the Lake District.

York to Leeds via Harrogate

Starting in the city of York, steeped in history and renowned for its medieval architecture and, of course, the city’s magnificent Minster.

This train journey sees passengers travel through delightful countryside scenery as it makes its way to the beautiful spa town of Harrogate.

Hull to Driffield

This little-known route offers the very best of the East Yorkshire countryside as it makes its way through the market town of Beverley and medieval Cottingham ahead of getting into the bustling town of Driffield which is also known as the ‘Capital of the Wolds’.

Passengers travelling with Northern can now compare the cost, travel time and CO2 emissions of their journey against that of road travel.
