Network Rail has appointed Cumbernauld-based AmcoGiffen as the main contractor for the rebuild of Troon station following a fire in 2021, which destroyed the station building on platform one.

A £5 million investment will see the re-building of the structure, capturing its historic character in order to remain in keeping with the building on platform two.

The 16th of July saw fire ravage the quaint station building and since then Network Rail has been hard at work with partners, stakeholders and the community in order to create a fitting design for the building. The appointment of the main contractor also marks significant progress for the project.

Modern standards have been applied in the new design, which will feature a ticket office and sizeable waiting area alongside a ‘changing places’ facility which will bring improvements in amenities for people with disabilities and their carers using the station.

Network Rail is aiming for construction to complete in time for The Open, the oldest golf tournament in the world which is being held at Troon in July 2024.

Liam Sumpter, chief operating officer at Network Rail said: “We are delighted to have appointed AmcoGiffen as the main contractor on the redevelopment of Troon station.”

“With the community and South Ayrshire Council fully on board with the designs for the station, the team is keen to get on-site and get the work underway.”

“Separately, we are already on site preparing for the reinstallation of the canopies which will be erected ahead of the programme. We’ll then move forward to the construction phase and focus on delivering the new station building for the community as soon as possible.”
