ScotRail’s innovative Highland Explorer project has recently received a prestigious accolade at the Scottish Transport Awards 2023.

The revolutionary active travel carriages were honoured with the Excellence in Transport Design award during the esteemed ceremony on Thursday, June 22.

Since their introduction in July 2021, these designated carriages, unique in the UK, have transformed travel on many Scottish routes and offer an unparalleled experience for cyclists and sports enthusiasts.

ScotRail’s active travel carriages have been completely reimagined to accommodate the needs of cyclists and those with bulky sports gear.

With the capacity to hold up to 20 cycles, including ordinary and tandem bikes, these carriages are a pioneering addition to the UK rail network.

Notably, they also feature a unique e-bike charging socket, allowing passengers to charge their electric bicycles during their journey conveniently.

Before their launch, the active travel carriages underwent an extensive interior and exterior makeover. The revamped design of class 153 diesel units includes larger cushioned seats, USB sockets, and plug charging points for passengers’ convenience.

Additionally, each carriage features table maps that provide detailed route information, highlighting recommended walking, cycling, and visiting spots. QR codes at every table further offer additional inspiration for exploring Scotland‘s attractions.

Initially introduced on the West Highland Line between Glasgow and Oban, the Highland Explorer carriages have expanded their service to the Mallaig branch of this iconic route.

The introduction of these carriages not only benefits adventure-seeking cyclists but also brings advantages to local communities.

Passengers can now enjoy 15% more seating capacity, increased luggage space, and access to an additional onboard toilet, enhancing their overall travel experience.
