Epping Ongar Railway Celebrates Record-Breaking Steam Gala

The Ongar Railway recently concluded its most successful steam gala, with enthusiasts and visitors flocking from all corners of the country to experience this remarkable event.

Over three days, from 23rd to 25th June, the annual gala welcomed 1,200 passengers, witnessing a series of thrilling steam train journeys that delighted attendees. With trains operating near-full capacity, the event proved to be a resounding success for the historic railway.

Among the highlights of the steam gala was the presence of the renowned Pendennis Castle locomotive, a formidable rival to the iconic Flying Scotsman. Despite its impressive age of 99 years, Pendennis Castle showcased its timeless allure by operating an intensive all-steam-hauled train service on the former Great Eastern and London Underground line.

The majestic locomotive captured the imagination of railway enthusiasts and curious onlookers, transporting them back to a bygone era of steam-powered travel.

The , known for its commitment to preserving the heritage of steam railways, spared no effort in providing an unforgettable experience for its visitors.

Alongside Pendennis Castle, the railway showcased the power and charm of tank locomotive 9466 a GWR 94XX Class designed by F W Hawksworth alongside their very own steam locomotives. These remarkable machines pulled trains throughout the event.

The allure of the steam gala extended far beyond the railway’s impressive collection of locomotives. Visitors were treated to various captivating attractions and activities, ensuring an immersive experience. From educational exhibits on the history of steam engines to interactive demonstrations on railway maintenance, enthusiasts and families found ample entertainment and education throughout the event.

The success of the Epping Ongar Railway’s steam gala can be attributed to the dedicated organisers and the overwhelming support of the local community. The event was a magnet for railway enthusiasts, drawing them from across the country to the charming Epping Ongar Railway. This vibrant gathering of like-minded individuals fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared passion, further enhancing the overall atmosphere of the gala.

Marco Carrara, from the Railway’s Management Team, said: “The event surpassed our expectations, with an intensive service and star locomotive drawing the crowds to see and hear the engines hard at work on our challenging gradients. The volunteers can be proud of what they all achieved in showcasing what the railway has to offer, and it was a delight to see lots of happy, smiling faces not only filling the trains across all three days of the event, but also providing a boost to the local economy”.

Marco also stated: “The Railway, however, acknowledges that there were a number of issues that impacted our neighbours and local residents that we will learn from, and review what mitigations can be put in place for future events.”

  1. Poor old local residents. Three days a year and a lot of people enjoying themselves and the local economy boosted. Get back in your huts, you miserable people.
