Accessibility improvements for station have been confirmed by ‘s Railway and come as part of the Department for Transports Scheme.

The scheme allows to complete much-needed enhancements to stations across the country, such as step-free access.

Network Rail will host a community drop-in event in order for residents to see the proposed finalised plan for Dumfries station prior to submission for planning approval.

Attendees will also get a chance to meet the team who will put a new footbridge in place.

The event will take place:

  • Thursday the 15th of June
  • The Cairndale Hotel, Dumfries
  • From 4pm to 7pm.

Architects and stakeholders have worked with Network Rail in order to create a design for Dumfries station and include a brand new footbridge with lifts and step-free access created for both platforms.

The design of the improvements pays special attention to Dumfries station’s history in order for the modern adaptations to maintain the station’s historic look and feel.

Scottish stations which have recently benefited from the Access for All programme include Croy and Johnstone stations. Work is also currently in progress for Port Glasgow station.

Karen McChesney, Network Rail’s town planning lead for the accessibility work at Dumfries station, said: “We are really pleased that Dumfries station has been chosen as part of the Access for All scheme and look forward to welcoming the local community along to see the designs prior to submission for listed building consent planning.”

“The community is at the heart of Scotland’s Railway, so we feel it’s only fair they get the first look at what we are presenting and ask any questions directly to those delivering the project.”

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Cairndale Hotel on Thursday 15 June.”
