The union is to mark the 21st anniversary of the rail disaster, tomorrow, 10th May.

On the 10th May 2002, a northbound train heading to Norfolk derailed at high speed at Potters Bar and killed 7, injuring 76.

The accident left part of the train wedged between the station platforms and building structures.

Six of the victims were passengers, whilst the seventh was killed by falling masonry.

Back in May 2003, the HSE filed a report that found that the points were poorly maintained and this was the main cause of the accident.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: “Today we remember the victims of the avoidable Potters bar tragedy 21 years ago.

“Potters Bar could have been avoided if safety had been put ahead of profits.

“Those responsible for creating that lethal culture escaped prosecution for their role creating an avoidable disaster.”
