London North Eastern Railway (LNER) continues its centenary celebrations by announcing a new menu for its First Class passengers.
The original London and Northeastern Railway formed on 1 January 1923 as a result of grouping following the Railway Act of 1921. Earlier this month, the operator named an Azuma train ‘Century’ in celebration of the hundred-year landmark.
The publicly-run operator has chosen dishes which it believes showcases “iconic” dishes from LNER’s history, interpreted in a modern way, and will make them available from Wednesday 24 May.
LNER’s chefs prepare the dishes in the trains’ onboard kitchens, and the new additions include:
- Beef olives stew, which is based on a dish served on LNER trains in 1923. While the original consisted of stuffed parcels of sliced beef, LNER’s new, gluten-free version is a beef stew with bacon, carrots and mushrooms served in red wine sauce with herb-infused new potatoes.
- Coronation chicken brioche roll, combining chicken with creamy curried mayonnaise on a bed of fresh spinach leaves in a brioche roll studded with Nigella seeds. The dish was originally created to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation 1953, and the new version also marks the coronation of her son earlier this month.
- Apple tart, with sliced apple in sweet frangipane in a golden pastry case. LNER served Apple Flan on its trains a hundred years ago.
LNER has sourced the dishes and ingredients from local suppliers in Scotland, North East England, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and London, having selected them on the basis of produce quality, local sourcing and responsible approach.
Three complimentary menus – Dine, Dish or Deli – are on offer to First Class passengers, depending on which train they are travelling on.
The Dine and Dish menus also including hot sandwiches (including vegan options), overnight oats, a speciality salad bowl, and hot and cold beverages. The Deli menu includes sandwiches, sausage rolls, snacks, biscuits and sweet treats. Customers in Standard Class passengers can sample a variety of produce through LNER’s ‘Let’s Eat At Your Seat’ service and at the café bar.
Richard Judge, Head of Customer Experience at LNER, said: “For a century, LNER has prided itself on ensuring that our customers enjoy unrivalled excellence in our onboard catering. These dishes are ‘oldies but goodies’ from our past and, with the modern interpretation our chefs and local suppliers have brought to them, they’re a fantastic and timely addition to the new menus we introduced in January. We really hope everyone enjoys our new dishes.”
