TransPennine Express’s efforts to become a sustainable and environmentally friendly train operator have been recognised by the Carbon Literary Trust, which has recognised the operator as being Carbon Literate.
Achieving the Carbon Literate standard laid down by the Trust is no easy feat and TransPennine Express marks the first train operator to attain this level in the UK. The achievement is the first stage of a long-term programme which will see the rail operators’ approaches to both sustainability and environmental awareness improved.
Nicola Martin, Head of Sustainability for TPE, said: “I’m delighted that we have been recognised for our commitment to tackle the climate crisis and maintain our low-carbon culture.”
“This accreditation, as a Carbon Literate Organisation, is a visible ‘badge’ that shows our dedication to lead and enable sustainable tourism and transport across the North and beyond. We’ve achieved bronze and are well on our way towards silver.”
The Carbon Literacy Trust’s Carbon Literate accreditation is recognised internationally and signifies that those awarded it are putting in the necessary actions to deal with the climate crisis.
Since 2019, TransPennine Expres has reduced its carbon emissions by 18% thanks to the use of its Nova fleet which are bi-mode and electric trains which support passengers CO2 contribution by a huge 77% when compared to travel by car.
Achieving the Carbon Literate standard also recognises the focus of the rail operator on handling all aspects of sustainability by enhancing daily working practices.
Nicola also added: “More than 85% of our senior management have undertaken Carbon Literacy training bespoke to rail, which gives them the tools and knowledge to take positive action to tackle the climate crisis.”
“This is a great step on our journey to be as environmentally efficient as possible, demonstrating our contribution to net zero ambitions, and reducing our negative environmental impacts.”

Oh dear – instead of sending its managers on virtue-signalling “carbon literacy” training it would be better if Transpennine Express actually made some effort to ensure their trains actually run when they’re supposed to. They routinely cancel around half their timetable so you just can’t rely on them. I’m sure all the managers feel very pleased with themselves getting a bronze in carbon literacy but what on earth has this got to do with their actual business – which is to run trains.
The Transpennine service never runs ,that is how it’s received this award.
It has to be the worst company in decades for non existent services and customer disregard
If this company receives another contract from the Government there is some serious dodgy dealings going on.
Trans Pennine have discovered a clever way of becoming carbon neutral – cancel all your trains!
Its such a pity that when it comes to running a full service that TPE are totally unscrupulous.
They have little regard for their customers well being.
Let’s be honest though. You’re not going to create much of a carbon footprint if you cancel all of your trains!
Just concentrate on running a punctual and regular service, net zero is impossible, and not realistic or desirable. We are carbon based life forms, and everything we do involves carbon. Humans are fundamentally incompatible with the earths environment, so we either carry on regardless and stop worrying, or stop breeding and die out, leaving the earth to recover fully over time. 8 Billion people cannot live as hunter gatherers, and anything less is just worthless virtue signalling, obfuscating the real problem.
