Record-breaking Easter weekend for the Leighton Buzzard Railway

Over the Easter weekend, the welcomed a record-breaking number of visitors on both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

Trains were hauled by steam locomotives on a three-mile journey to Stonehenge where families could search for Easter Eggs around the museum site.

On both days the railway had two trains in service, with the regular Andrew Barclay locomotive working alongside a restored First World War Baldwin locomotive .

A new attraction this year was a competition for homemade Easter bonnets, with special large Easter eggs on offer that were won by several children for their handicrafts.

As in previous years, the biggest Easter Bunny in was at Page’s Park Station to welcome everyone to the railway and was also there to hand out all winners’ prizes.

The railway’s next event will be a Teddy Bear’s Picnic during the King’s Coronation Bank Holiday weekend, and the return of the railway’s Gin & Whisky Festival on Sunday, 7th May, has now expanded to become the Bedfordshire Gin & Whisky Festival. That will take place from 10.30am until 4.30pm in the engine shed at Page’s Park, where knowledgeable staff will be on hand to help visitors choose the right spirit from a selection of about 60 whiskies, gins, other spirits, and pre-mixed cocktails that are expected to be available.

On Sunday, 28th May, the railway will welcome the children’s TV character Bluey to Stonehenge Works for one day only, and children will the steam-train ride to meet her as she appears at intervals throughout the day. To satisfy the anticipated demand for people wishing to meet Blue, the railway will run longer, seven-coach, trains.
