During the upcoming Easter holiday, between Good Friday, 7th and Easter Monday, 10th April, most train services in will run as normal, but engineering work will cause disruption to services through the important locations of Carstairs and Motherwell.

At Carstairs, there will be no route through Carstairs Junction for services running to and from Edinburgh Waverley or Central via the West Coast Mainline. Most ScotRail services that operate via Carstairs will be cancelled, although a small number will be rerouted via Shotts. A rail-replacement bus service will operate between Fauldhouse and Carstairs and will call at Carluke where it will connect with alternative ScotRail trains.

In Motherwell, a new bridge is being installed as part of the Ravenscraig Masterplan Development that will require the diversion via Holytown of ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and from Saturday, 1st to Sunday, 9th April. Rail rail-replacement bus services will operate between Bellshill and Wishaw, and will call at Motherwell and Shieldmuir.

On Sunday, 9th April, there will be no trains between Dumfries and Carlisle because of engineering work. Rail-replacement bus services will replace trains between these stations.

Anyone intending to travel during the Easter period should check their journey before travelling on the National Rail Enquiries website or their train operator’s website.

Liam Sumpter, Route Director for Network Rail Scotland, said: “Our engineers will be working hard to deliver vital projects over the Easter holiday.

“Our Carstairs works are designed to improve the railway so that we can provide a better and more reliable service for our passengers and freight customers.

“At Ravenscraig, our work is helping to regenerate the area and the new bridge will link communities by providing connectivity between the M74 and M8 motorways.

“If you are planning to travel this Easter, please remember to check beforehand.”

  1. A flyover or underpass would be suitable for trains coming to and from Edinburgh Waverley such as Transpennine Express, Avanti West Coast and Crosscountry.
