In a “revolution” to onboard catering on its services, train operator (TPE) has introduced hot food to its menu in First Class.

Many morning services on TPE’s Nova trains to some of the North’s and Scotland’s best destinations now have a choice of bacon and sausage ciabatta sandwiches, sausage rolls, and hot porridge.

On late afternoon and evening services, travellers can choose from curry in a naan, a poppadom dip box, sausage rolls, nuts, and sweet treats. Alcoholic drinks are also available on evening services, including -based Northern Monk’s Faith Hazy Pale Ale, a selection of delicious wines, and tasty tipples from Gin.

The catering improvement is not restricted to First Class customers, as a revamped menu is also available onboard many Class 185 trains and in Standard Class on the Nova fleet.

To provide customers with the best possible choice, TransPennine Express worked with suppliers from local communities across the North of England and Scotland to come up with a range of sandwiches, snacks, and drinks that are synonymous with, or have close links to, towns and cities across its network.

The range of hot food is available on Nova 1 and 2 services between:

  • Manchester Airport/ and Edinburgh/Glasgow;
  • Newcastle and Edinburgh;
  • Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle;
  • a limited number of Nova 3 services between Liverpool and .

Emma Teale, Head of Customer Insights and Improvements at TPE, said: “We’re delighted to introduce our new first-class hot food to our Nova services and a revamped menu on our catered routes.

“We’ve added some new and exciting products to give a boost to our menus and we’re excited that many of these products have come from suppliers based in the communities we are proud to serve.

“Whether our customers are looking for a great start to the morning with a hearty breakfast, or an evening treat with a cheeky drink after a long day, our first and standard class catering has a little bit of something for everyone.”

  1. Are they having a laugh. They cannot get their train services etc right.
    It’s a shame that TPE have really good trains and like all operators have had their good bits cocked up by rail strikes.
    In “normal times” I would praise such change in catering but now , it’s irrelevant.
