Metro Do Porto’s yellow line extension to get state-of-the-art signalling system by Alstom

Alstom has won a contract with Metro Do Porto which is a light railway system in the city of Porto and will see the , safety and control systems put in place for its Metro Porto yellow line extension.

The project will see the smart and sustainable mobility giant both develop and supply the new line’s signalling including the latest in interlocking which allows vehicles to be monitored in real-time. The installation and commissioning of the system will be developed at Alstom’s latest site in the Maia, Porto district.

Metro Porto’s yellow line expansion operations from Santo Ovídio to Vila d’Este which is in the south area of Porto. The vast project has seen three new stations created and also features an underground. The new route is 3.1km, and features a 500m  viaduct as well as 1,000m of tunnel. The extension is set to begin operation during early 2023 and comes as part of a huge improvement in urban transport for the area.

Currently, the Metro Do Porto features around 78km of track over six lines carrying approximately 70 million passengers each year. Alstom has already supplied 102 trains which operate on the network alongside the provision of onboard signalling systems. As Alstom supports Metro Do Porto in its ongoing growth, it will also put in place onboard Automatic Train Protection system or ATP for the 18 trains which are to be added to its fleet.

Working in Portugal for more than 30 years, Alstom has manufactured or provided the technology in 2 out of every three trains including high-speed, regional, metro and tram trains. On a digital front, Alstom sees over 1,500km of Portuguese railway and more than 500 onboard units are managed via its ATP system and bespoke signalling solutions.
