Dunfermline station gets a name change as the former town receives historic city status

ScotRail has confirmed that the station will now be called City following His Majesty King Charles’s recognition of its official historic status

Dunfermline’s railway station is well used and essential in providing passengers with connectivity to other areas of Fife and further afield.

The change of the station’s name to ‘Dunfermline City’ was revealed and a special ceremony was held on Monday the 3rd of October, however, it will take some time for the logistics to be completed fully.

The changing of a station name is a complicated process and will see every reference to the station through many databases right across the rail industry altered, including those utilised by for the purpose of , and general operation. 

This complex process has now started and will be formally completed shortly and will see ‘Dunfermline City’ signs at the station and throughout all electronic channels. 

Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth was eager for the railway station’s name to correctly represent the change in Dunfermline’s status and approved the process in order for it to take place and said: “I am delighted that Dunfermline’s significant historic status and importance to Scotland is being properly recognised as a City today. I am pleased that station will be renamed by ScotRail as Dunfermline City so that everyone arriving and leaving by rail knows that Dunfermline is now a city again. I am sure this decision will be warmly welcomed by the City’s residents as they celebrate this momentous occasion.”

Alex Hynes, Managing Director of Scotland’s Railway, said: “We are thrilled that Dunfermline has been awarded city status and it is fantastic to see The King and the Queen Consort visit the newly named city.

“It is appropriate that we play our part in this change and we have started the process of changing the name of the station.

“It will take some time to formally complete, but we are doing everything we can to make this exciting change as soon as we can in recognition of Dunfermline as Scotland’s eighth city.”
