The expansion project at Motherwell station has entered its fifth stage.
The next few weeks will see work carried out to put foundations in place in order to expand the station concourse alongside a steel structure which will become the brand new bigger station building.
The public realm outside of the station building will also see work carried out by North Lanarkshire Council to create a new transport hub via funding from the Glasgow City Region City Deal and will include a large bus facility, a new station access road, car drop-off area as well as blue badge parking. The improvement work will also see better facilities for taxis, pedestrians and cycle access and also improvements in links between bus and train services as well as reducing town centre congestion.
The project will cost £14.5 million in order to provide an array of benefits for customers such as improvements to ticket retailing facilities, and a retail environment which will include food and drinks offerings alongside
John MacDonald, ScotRail Senior Project Manager, said: “We’re now at a really exciting stage of this project, where customers can see the scale of the work we’re undertaking to create a bigger, brighter station.
“We’re progressing the installation of the steel frame and glazed roof across the concourse which will give customers more of a feel for how the new station building will look.
“Motherwell is ready for a railway station that matches the town’s dynamic and forward-looking perspective.
“I’m confident that these improvements will create a welcoming station for customers, and that’s key to making rail a more attractive option as we look to encourage more people back to the railway.”
