Eurotunnel Freight has launched an online calculator that will enable logistics companies to calculate their emissions and CO2 savings.

There is a growing pressure on logistics and haulage companies to reduce their environmental impact. A Carbon 4 study conducted in 2020 found that a lorry crossing the channel on Le Shuttle emits 12 times fewer greenhouse gases than one crossing by ferry. With this advantage, a bespoke calculation of emissions will help Le Shuttle Freight’s clients further reduce each journey’s environmental impact.

The new online calculator will allow total emissions to be calculated. The results will be published on a tailored certificate which will declare how many tonnes of CO2 customers of Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight will emit. More importantly, it will show how many tonnes of CO2 can be saved in a set time period of up to a year by using Le Shuttle for the short sea crossing.

Another benefit of the online calculator is that it allows CO2 usage to be calculated for specific loads, which will allow companies to show their commitment to reducing CO2 when tendering for new business or renewing contracts.

Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight has in place sustainability goals in line with supporting its customers’ wider business goals. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and is in line to achieve this having reduced emissions by 33% between 2012 and 2019, in particular by the use of fully-electric trains running on 100% low-carbon electricity in both the UK and .

Christian Dufermont, Freight Commercial Director at Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Freight, said: “As a vital transport link between the UK and Continental Europe, we recognise the importance of helping our customers become as sustainable as possible. With the increasing pressure on the logistics industry to reduce their CO2 output, we are hoping our emissions certificate will enable freighters to better monitor their environmental impact and to help reduce it even further by using more sustainable means of crossing the Channel.”
