Gwili Steam Railway begins work on Abergwili Junction development

The has marked a milestone this week as they saw work start on the development at Abergwili Junction.

Phase one of the work will see an access road built from the A485 as well as work on the foundations of the Dan Do Shed, with the shed being built next year.

The work has been help thanks to a Community Asset Development Grant of £150,000, which is a European Regional Development Fund Grant that has been awarded through the Welsh Government.

Other funds have been provided by the Gwili Railway Company, Gwili Railway Preservation Society and the Welsh Railway Trust.

It is planned that the work will be completed in time to allow all trains to start from Abergwili Junction in Easter 2023.

The work taking place involves the construction of a car park and a shed. Currently, trains run to Abergwili Junction, but there is no access to the station.

Whilst the the work is taking place, trains will continue to run to Abergwili Junction.

Matt Bowen, the railway’s chairman commented “We are very excited to be commencing the development of the site at Abergwili which will provide new and enhanced facilities for the railway, our visitors and the local community. We look forward to working with our contractor, Ian Davies Plant in executing the works with the aim of starting all trains from Abergwili Junction by Easter 2023”

  1. The Gwili Railway is an excellent and friendly enterprise and the above developments are to be thoroughly welcomed.

    One thing worries me though and that is the (seeming) lack of a plan for what will happen if Plaid Cymru & Transport for Wales embark on their ludicrous scheme to rebuild the Carmarthen – Aberystwyth line? If it follows the original formation then much of the Gwili’s past and future work may be put in jeopardy.
