Engineering works on Greater Anglia and c2c during August Bank Holiday

Services are likely to be disrupted on the Greater Anglia and c2c network during August Bank Holiday from Saturday, 27th to Monday, 29th August whilst Network Rail carries out essential maintenance to the tracks, signalling, and overhead lines.

The work is essential to keep services running safely and reliably.

Rail-replacement bus services will be in place and passengers are advised to check before they travel. No full-size bikes or e-scooters can be carried by rail replacement buses.

Work taking place includes:

  • Signalling works as part of the re-signalling programme between Ipswich and Ely and Cambridge North;
  • Track renewal at Elmswell level crossing’
  • Track, drainage and overhead wire structure works between Clapton and Chingford;
  • Overhead line work between Barking and Pitsea as part of the overhead line renewals programme on the line between London and (Sunday only);
  • Points works between Fenchurch Street and Barking
  • Platform extension works between Broxbourne and Hertford East and between Stratford and Meridian Water.

Passengers should check National Rail Enquiries for the latest information on which trains will be running.

 

Ipswich to Ely/Cambridge North

  • Buses will replace trains between Ipswich and Ely, and between Ipswich and Cambridge North.
  • A train service will remain in operation between Ely and Peterborough.
  • A shuttle train service will also operate between Cambridge and Newmarket on Saturday only in connection with Newmarket races.

Liverpool Street to Cheshunt (Local Diversions)

  • Greater Anglia / services will be diverted via (Southbury route) instead of Tottenham Hale (Lea Valley route) until 06:00 on Saturday, 27th August, until 08:15 on Sunday 28th August, and between 23:15 on Sunday 28th and 05:00 Monday, 29th August.

Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness via Ockendon

  • Services will be diverted to Liverpool Street and will call additionally at Stratford but will not call at West Ham.
  • Until 07:00 engineering works will be extended out to Upminster and services will start/terminate at Upminster.
  • Passengers should use London Underground services to complete their journeys.
  • Services will be diverted via an alternative route between Upminster and Pitsea and will call additionally at Laindon and Basildon but will not call at stations via Ockendon or Tilbury. Rail replacement buses will be in operation between Upminster and Pitsea via Ockendon and Tilbury, whilst tickets will be accepted on District Line services between Upminster and Tower Hill and on Jubilee line services between Stratford and West Ham.

Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness via Rainham

  • These services WILL NOT RUN. Rail replacement will run between Upminster and Grays via Rainham and Purfleet, whilst passengers travelling to / from Dagenham Dock may use their tickets on TfL bus routes EL2 or 287.

Between Broxbourne and Hertford East

  • Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th, buses will replace trains between Hertford East and Broxbourne.
  • Greater Anglia’s 17-day blockade on the Hertford East line ends on Monday 29 August. More details are available at greateranglia.co.uk/hertfordeast.

Between Stratford and Meridian Water

  • Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th – Greater Anglia West Anglia services will not serve Stratford between 06:35 and 21:15 Saturday and all day Sunday, with the exception of the 21:42 Cambridge North to Stratford service (arriving 23:13) which will operate as normal.
  • Greater Anglia West Anglia services will be diverted into London Liverpool Street via Seven Sisters and Hackney Downs.
  • No services will operate between Meridian Water and Stratford.
  • Customers for Stratford should change onto Greater Anglia main line / Southend Victoria services from London Liverpool Street;
  • Customers travelling to / from Lea Bridge should use TfL buses between Lea Bridge and Stratford / Hackney Downs.

The rest of Anglia’s rail network, including the main lines, will be open as normal.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, said:

“We’re carrying out renewal and upgrade works across the network to improve reliability and prevent delays now and in the future. Passengers are advised to check before they travel. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we carry out this essential work.”

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director said:

“We’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused by these projects, but it’s essential so that we can run our new longer trains.

“Customers should check before they travel and allow more time for their journeys.

“Where we are able to run rail replacement buses, they will be fully accessible with extra staff on hand to make the transition between train and bus as easy as possible.

“Customer reaction to our new trains has been fantastic. With their plug and USB points, fast free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, improved accessibility features, dedicated cycle spaces and better passenger information screens, our new trains offer a much better travel experience.”

c2c’s MD Rob Mullen, said:

“The work Network Rail is carrying out over the August Bank Holiday is essential in keeping services running safely and reliably in the longer term.

“Some of our services will be operating differently than normal with rail replacement in operation on parts of our route. We would ask that our customers check before they travel over the summer bank holiday.”

  1. Should also continue on replacing overhead wires between Gas Factory junction-Fenchurch Street, Pitsea-Barking, Upminster-Grays and Pitsea-Shoeburyness. And also between Prittlewell-Southend Victoria.
