Alstom was awarded the contract for the supply of 25 Zefiro Express electric high-speed trains with a further option for 15 extra trains by SJ. The contract is worth approximately €650m with the first of the trains set to be delivered during 2026.

The impressive high-speed trains will be Swedens fastest ever with the capability of operating at max speeds of 250km/h.

The Zefiro Express trains have been designed to run in difficult weather conditions, including when temperatures are as low as -40°C, the train’s innovative technology means that passengers will enjoy safe and comfortable travel.

Carriages on the train will feature flat and ramp-free floors which support accessibility for passengers getting on, off and moving through the train.

The state-of-the-art Zefiro Express trains are part of Alstom’s Avelia family and feature a capacity of 363 seats with carriage width, electrical systems and signalling systems developed to enable the trains to run in both Sweden and Denmark with certification for traffic in Norway.

Alstom’s Spanish factory has 200 employees and oversees the design, management and supply of propulsion and electric traction systems for all types of railway applications in all power ranges such as reactions systems for mainline rolling stock including locomotives, high-speed trains, long-distance, regional and commuter trains as well as urban transport such as metros, monorails and trams.

Alstom recently won a contract to supply 40 new Flexity M34 trams to Gothenberg in Sweden in a €100m order.

The Zefiro Express marks the largest offering in the market, covering max operating speeds of between 200km/h and 350km/h. The trains feature a variety of configurations and architectures in order to provide a customer with the best possible fit for their needs including single-deck, double-deck, concentrated or distributed reactions, articulated or non-articulated architecture as well as options such as tilting capability.

Around 3,000 high-speed or very high-speed trains have been sold worldwide over the last 40 years by Alstom.
