Ex-LNER A4 No. 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’ is set to go on display at the in a ‘never seen before’ static display.

The museum is already full of historic vehicles including cars, buses and trains as well as a number of original artefacts.

Union of South Africa is on of six A4s in preservation and has been under ownership of John Cameron since 1967.

This is the first time it is displayed for public access at one single site.

Union of South Africa will be moved into the Bury Transport Museum in May.

ELR Chairman, Mike Kelly, says: “We have enjoyed, over several years, seeing and riding behind this icon of the rails, one of six surviving A4 Gresley creations. Today, we have the unique honour to have been entrusted to host the Union of South Africa as it retires from steam and makes its first static appearance for people to admire and enjoy up close and personal.

“This is truly a unique opportunity to get on the footplate of an iconic locomotive – and will be something not to be missed.

Mike adds: “We’re continually enhancing our offering to give all our visitors the best possible experience of the history of steam travel. Bringing the Union of South Africa into the museum has required us to make some changes and we want to take this opportunity to thank our current exhibitors for their support over the years.”
