The Bluebell Railway has issued its latest update on the progress with overhauling steam locomotive Bulleid Battle of Britain Class Pacific No. 34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair.
During 2021, most of the work on the boiler stays was completed, the chassis re-wheeled, and the frames painted. The pistons and valves to all three cylinders are in place, as well as the driving wheel springs, the front and rear trucks, and the Wakefield lubricators and pipework.
The brake rigging and brake blocks are fitted and attention is now concentrated on refitting the motion. The railway is still looking forward to restoration being completed later this year.
Although the current restoration is nearing completion, there will inevitably be maintenance required in the years ahead, and of course in 10 years’ time the boiler ticket will expire and the whole cycle will start again. For this reason, the railway is encouraging supporters to become members of The Bluebell Battle of Britain Locomotive Group 500+ Club 2022 which continues to provide finance for the loco.
The club will comprise at least 500 but not more than 1,333 entries for the year from March 2022 until February 2023 and entries will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis, subject to availability. Each entry costs £15, with no limit on the number of entries that an individual can make. Applicants must be over 16 years of age. Entries are not transferable.
Members will participate in monthly draws with four prizes each month. Draws will take place on the 15th of each month, with prizes of £25, £50, £75, and £100.
Prizes will be paid in cash or in Bluebell Railway vouchers (subject to availability), at the prize winner’s discretion. If the prize-winner chooses to receive vouchers, the prize will be increased by a bonus of £5. All winners will receive their cheques within a month of the draw.
