The Stanier Mogul Fund have published their latest update on the overhaul of their London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier Class 5 2-6-0 ‘Stanier Mogul’ Class No.13268(British Railways No.42968).
Cylinders and Boiler
With the gaskets for the front cylinders cover due for renewal, the decision was made to use a different type of gasket, with the new ones made from soft copper. This recommendation came from team leader Graham, partly due to soft copper gaskets being used by other locomotives based on the Severn Valley Railway (SVR).
Recently on the big miller machine the super heater header block has received work. Now completed, the work carried out included machining the new seatings and both drilling and threading where welds had been done to repair cracks.
Frame
Replacement front drop plates are in the process of being made. Starting with the right-hand side of the engine’s frame, a jig was made to ensure the new holes were drilled in the right spot. Once checked and approved, the jig and mag drill was set up and began to drill holes into the running plate’s support angle. In due course bolts will be fitted to hold the new angle front drop plates.
