The Severn Valley Railway has revealed the new name for its ‘purple locomotive’.
After thousands of votes were cast, the new name for 34027 ‘Taw Valley’ will be ‘Elizabeth II’.
Elizabeth II beat off competition from Severn Majesty, Valley Monarch and Gloriana to gain more than a third of votes from all over the world.
The locomotive is currently being repainted into its purple locomotive at Bridgnorth works, with metal nameplates being commissioned.
After a ballot that saw thousands of votes cast from around the world, the Severn Valley Railway has announced a temporary, new name for 34027 ‘Taw Valley’.
Following its new identity, the locomotive will haul SVR services during the spring and summer and will play an important role in the Platinum Jubilee and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games celebrations.
Michael Dunn, head of visitor experience at the Severn Valley Railway, said: “We worked with 34027’s owners to decide on the final shortlist. We’re thrilled that the public have chosen ‘Elizabeth II’ as their winner, and think this particular name proved popular because of its simplicity and its clear connection to The Queen.
“By repainting and renaming 34027, we’ve chosen a way of celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee that brings maximum impact! We’ve got plenty more surprises up our sleeve for our Platinum Jubilee celebrations over the extended Bank Holiday weekend on 2nd-5th June, so keep those eyes peeled.”

Brilliant idea – needs some top PR work now to pull in the punters – not just enthusiasts. Try and get it on local television or National press. A decent Local jounalist wouldhelpwith that. Hope it maximises profit.
she? looks astonishingly radiant and beautiful; I look forward to ??another purple people eater!
Looking forward to that.
Why would you downvote what is a brilliant idea and ought to provide a major income boost for the railway. This isn’t just about the purist steam anorak who is ‘outraged’ by the thought of a purple loco. It is about attracting VISITORS and their cash – without which there will be no locomotives for enthusiasts to enthuse over!
