Contract for maintenance of Shanghai Metro line 12 won by Alstom’s Chinese joint venture

Alstom’s Chinese joint venture wins contract to provide maintenance for Shanghai Metro line 12

Alstom in has won a contract worth around €43.6 million with Shanghai Metro to oversee whole of life maintenance service for 204 Movia metro cars

The metro cars make up 34 trains on Shanghai’s Line 12 stage 2 and stage 3 project. The contract specifies that Shentong (Shanghai) Rail Transit Vehicle Maintenance Co Ltd (SHBRT) will take on the condition-based maintenance regime using advanced maintenance tools which include ‘s Orbita advanced train monitoring system, Automatic Vehicle Inspection System etc which will increase safety, reliability, availability and overall efficiency of Shanghai’s Line 12 fleet.

The extent of the contract also sees preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, balanced overhauls, safety inspections, train cleaning alongside train escort services for the 204 metro cars.

The project should be complete during November 2027.

Managing Director of Alstom China, Henry Wang, said:

We will focus on maintaining our high-performance and are confident that our experienced joint venture team with advanced maintenance tools will provide reliable service and contribute to seamless operations for our customers as well as passengers in Shanghai.”

In 2016 SHBRT won the first-ever contract for full fleet metro maintenance in China as Shanghai Metro employed them to provide 12 years of maintenance service for 246 metro cars for Line 12 and this latest contract is in addition to the initial agreement.

Since its inception, SHBRT has carried out overhaul services for 1,362 metro cars for Shanghai Metro. By providing the respective partners’ competencies in terms of technology, equipment and business, the joint venture is focused on creating efficient service for urban mass transit vehicles in China bringing customers daily maintenance, intermediate repairs, overhaul, refurbishment and technical consultation.

All of the 204 Movia metro cars for the Shanghai line 12 phase 2 and phase 3 have been delivered by a further Alstom Chinese Joint Venture, Changchun Alstom Railway Vehicles Company Limited (CARC). Up to date, CARC has provided 1,548 metro cars to Shanghai Metro over three Shanghai Metro lines.
