Following recent speculation regarding the plans for a livery change for LNER A3 No. 60103 Flying Scotsman, RailAdvent approached the National Railway Museum for confirmation.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the National Railway Museum said that “Any speculation about what we are planning is just that – speculation”.
The famous A3 locomotive is due to be withdrawn from service in 2022 to be overhauled ready for its centenary anniversary in 2023.
The locomotive currently is seen in BR Green livery with smoke deflectors, but recently, rumours and speculation have started to spread regarding what it might look like once its overhaul is finished.
In their full statement, the NRM spokesperson said “The National Railway Museum and Locomotion are planning to mark Flying Scotsman’s centenary with an exciting programme of activities and events throughout 2023. Any speculation about what we are planning is just that – speculation. It’s great that people are starting to look ahead with anticipation to the centenary, and we’re working hard behind the scenes to ensure that we deliver a fitting celebration for a much-loved locomotive.”
“Flying Scotsman is scheduled for overhaul this year (2022) and we expect to announce the schedule for rail operations in the next few weeks

‘The Flying Scotsman’ name plate should be reinstated on the front of the engine. This place has currently been usurped by ‘Steam Dreams’ nameplate on the front. Disgraceful!
Ian Riley did a fantastic job of overhauling what could have been a lost cause. Made sure she wasn’t stuffed and mounted
Should be back in LNER apple green.
It’s a few years since I visited [of course] but the NRM had such a model on the 7mm layout, but it had the ‘bauhrie’ smoke deflectors on it – hardly ‘museum quality’.
In private ownership, anything goes,
but for a publicly-funded museum, no it doesn’t.
Flying Scotsman and all L.N.E.R. locos were never painted in “Apple Green”
They either laid red in Doncaster Green or Darlington Green.
Apple Green is a fictional livery invented by the media.
they want to let someone who knows what they are doing do it.
Well Ian Rialy really screwed NRM with the costs occur last renovations
Keep her in the museum! Attracts the worst kind of “spotter” and is more trouble than she is worth.
What! Perhaps we should ban all train travel because more people are ignoring mask-wearing than sticking to the rules, as I observed on the journey home tonight. Idiots appear everywhere and for all services, they are more noticeable because this locomotive attracts crowds, the vast majority of whom stick to the rules. If you see bad behaviour report it, we as serious enthusiasts do not have exclusive rights on these viewings. Anyone who does not want to see these engines working on the mainline as they were meant to, cannot be a true railway fan.
Those of us ‘ignoring mask-wearing’ are doing so because we can think for ourselves, more so than many it appears.
Quit with the insults [please].
