In this weeks book review, we take a look at George Woods’ book on English Electric Diesel Locomotives published by Amberley Publishing.
The handy sized book measures 23cm by 16cm and consists of almost 100 pages.
Published at £14.99, the book can also be found on Amazon at £10.49 (at the time of writing).
The book looks in a pictorial view at some of the many locomotives designed and built by English Electric. The company closed in 1968 and they built thousands of locomotives that were used around the world.
George Woods shares these mainly colour photos from his collection, looking at the locos in service from 1966 to 2019.
A wide variety of liveries were carried by the locos both during BR service and later in private ownership and these are well represented throughout the book.
The book is presented in the well known Amberley format with each page usually having 2 or 3 pictures complete with a detailed explanation of the loco and its location in the picture.
The photographs are in class order, although not split into seperate chapters.
English Electric diesel locomotives provides the reader with not only a look back in time at when these locos were common place on the network but also how they were repurposed to other parts of the network and into private ownership and still in use today.
As always when looking at historical photos, it is interesting to see a record of previous styles of freight and passenger formations and also to look back at how stations and junctions etc have changed over the years.
In summary, the book is a worthwhile addition to any collection and its handy size makes it easy to consume in almost any location.
The book is available to purchase from Amazon as well as from Amberley Publishing.
We would like to thank Amberley Publishing for providing RailAdvent with a copy of the book for review.
