In our latest book review, we take a look at Steam Across The Regions by David Knapman from publishers Pen and Sword.
The book can be purchased from Pen & Sword directly or from Amazon. Prices vary from £17.99 to £25 (at the time of writing).
Steam Across The Regions is over 120 pages long and measures 23cm x 28.5cm approximately and is split into six different chapters.
Described as a pictorial rail journey through Britain, each chapter has an introduction followed by many photographs with detailed captions.
The six chapters are:
- Scottish Region
- North Eastern Region
- Darlington
- Ripon
- York
- Eastern Region
- Great Eastern Lines
- Essex Branches
- London, Tilbury & Southend Lines
- King’s Cross
- The B12
- London Midland Region
- Carlisle
- Shap
- North Wales
- Leicester Central
- West Coast Lines
- Western Region
- Oxford
- Reading General
- Western Regional Miscellany
- Paddington
- Southern Region
- Around the Southern Region
- The Isle of Wight
- The London Area
- Guildford to Redhill
- Maunsell Moguls at Barry Island
The pictures are all from David Knapman’s collection that he took in the 1960s before diesel and electric locomotives were commonplace.
As always with these historical collections, it is fascinating to look back at how locomotives, stations, goods yards were and how they are today.
I think this book is especially interesting as it covers many different parts of the country, rather than focussing on one particular area.
In summary, the book is well worth picking up and the 100s of pictures are a fantastic record of times gone by.
The book is available to purchase from Amazon as well as from Pen & Sword
We would like to thank Pen & Sword for providing us with a copy of the book for review.
