The £1.7m project will see two railway bridges repaired and re-painted in the Edinburgh City Centre with work set to begin on the 10th of January 2022.
The bridges at Calton Road and New Street will see Network Rail teams start with grit blasting before moving on to steelwork repairs and strengthening and will finish with painting with the work expected to finish by August 2022.
In order to carry out the work safely, a lane closure will be in place on Calton Road from the 17th of January until the 19th of August 2022.
New Street will be closed to all traffic from the 26th of April through to the 19th of August 2022 and will see a diversion put in place via Calton Road, Watergate, Canongate and Cranston Street and vice versa.
Drivers are being advised to plan their journeys ahead due to these disruptions.
The work being carried out by Network Rail will both improve and protect the bridges for up to 20 years.
An online public information event was held yesterday where members of the public asked questions directly to the project team.
Christina Thomson, Scheme Project Manager at Network Rail, said:
“The investment we’re making in the bridges will not only extend their lifespans but will allow us to continue running a safe and reliable railway in and around Edinburgh.”
“We’re pleased to confirm that while New Street will close during the second phase of the works, Calton Road will remain open throughout the project, with a lane closure in place. Drivers should plan their journeys in advance as some delays may occur while the lane and road closures are in place.”
“We are thankful to the community for their patience and understanding while we carry out these essential works.”
