The major project will see £2.7m invested and will not only include the repair and re-paint of the structure, but also see a brand new walkway installed.

The project is due to start on Monday the 10th of January and is expected to complete by the 22nd of September 2022.

Drivers are being advised to expect delays and to plan ahead as Lovers Walk, which runs parallel to the river, will be closed for the entire project with a traffic management system put in place for Causewayhead Road.

A diversion will be in place using Forth Street, Shore Road, Forth Place, Goosecroft Road, Cowane Street, and Union Street.

Both pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to gain access via Lovers Walk.

An online public information event will be held on Tuesday the 14th of December by to provide information and to give members of the public the chance to ask questions directly to the project team.

Allison Flanagan, Scheme Project Manager at Network Rail, said:

“We’re investing in improving the Forth Viaduct as part of our ongoing commitment to running a safe and reliable railway.

“While we understand that a road closure and traffic management system is never ideal and can add time to journeys, we need to have these measures in place to allow the project to be completed in the safest and most efficient way.

“When complete, the structure will be better protected against the elements for years to come and won’t need to be re-painted for up to two decades.

“We’d like to thank the community for their patience and understanding while we carry out these vital works.”
