Network Rail to carry out major revamp to Cramlington station footbridge

Work will begin on Thursday, 25 November, and the footbridge will be shut to allow the team to work safely from Wednesday, 1st December 2021 through until late-March 2022 when the work is due to be completed.

are working with Network Rail to reduce any effect the work will have. Whilst the work is being carried out, passengers will be able to move around the platforms by pedestrian access ramps, which will be signposted.

The improvements to the footbridge will have no effect on the trains running through the station.

The footbridge work, which is costing £590,000, will ensure the bridge remains fit for purpose for many years by ensuring the structure stays strong and reliable whilst allowing a pleasant experience for passengers with the bridge being in good condition.

Firstly, the bridge will be taken from the station and any rust and old paint removed by grit-blast, before being inspected and repairs carried out being repainted. Finally, the bridge will be reinstalled at Cramlington railway station along with new handrails and stair treads as well as improvements to drainage.

Sarah Reid, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route, said: “This is a much-needed project which will help to future proof Cramlington railway station and create a nicer environment for everyone who uses the station.”

“This work does require the footbridge to be closed for over three months and we are sorry for any inconvenience which this causes. We are working closely with Northern to make sure that passengers can still move around the station easily and we’d like to thank all those using Cramlington station during this time for their patience.”
