Network Rail has improved the Wi-Fi at Waverley station.

The improved Wi-Fi is free to use and provides users with unlimited data that is fast enough to support video calls and streaming. It is also faster than the Wi-Fi available on many of Scotland’s trains.

Using the latest technology, the upgraded Wi-Fi allows users to connect multiple devices, and users do not need to create an account to log in. It is also certified as complying with ‘Friendly Wi-Fi’ requirements.

Friendly Wi-Fi is a government-initiated safe certification standard for public Wi-Fi.

Places that offer the service will display a “Friendly Wi-Fi” symbol, which indicates that the service meets minimum filtering standards, particularly in areas where children are present.

The Wi-Fi upgrade is just one of several improvements being made at Waverley to improve the station and provide better passenger facilities. Indeed, free Wi-Fi is one improvement that passengers have said that they would most like in the facilities available at Scotland’s railway stations.

Waverley is Scotland’s second busiest station and is used by 25 million people a year. As well as the Wi-Fi upgrade, Waverley’s toilets are being completely refurbished, changing facilities are being provided, and a new through route connecting the east concourse (platforms 2-5) to the ticket hall is being installed.

is rolling out unlimited Wi-Fi to all of its managed stations nationwide, and Glasgow Central has also recently benefitted from the upgrade.

Patrick Henry, station manager at Edinburgh Waverley, said “We are delighted to offer passengers at Edinburgh Waverley access to fast and free Wi-Fi.

“Surveys have regularly identified this as something passengers have been asking for at the station and we have delivered.

“We are confident that it will be welcomed and well-used as people return to the railway in ever-increasing numbers post-pandemic.”
