Starting this week, have introduced free parking for three months at four of its park and ride sites:- Four Lane Ends, Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot and Stadium of Light.

Metro, which is owned and managed by the public body, is offering the free parking to attract more passengers back after the lockdown.

Passenger numbers are back up to 80% of pre-pandemic levels.

With Christmas shopping just about to start and commuters heading back onto the offices, Metro felt it was the right time to make this offer to its customers.

Newcastle City Council owned Kingston Park Metro station park-and-ride offers free parking on Sundays.

Sunday free parking is also available at Regent Centre, Hebburn and Four Lane Ends Metro car parks.

Please note parking charges apply as normal at Felling and Heworth car parks in Gateshead as these are not part of the free parking initiative.

See Nexus website for further information on car parking at the Metro.

Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “Parking will be free for customers at four key Metro park and ride sites from 1 November as we look attract more people back to the network, and play our part in cutting congestion and improving air quality.”

“Around 80,000 people a day are now using Metro and we are the fastest recovering light rail operator in the country, and we are we determined to build on that with this free parking offer, which is aimed at stimulating further demand post lockdown.”

“It’s an ideal time to introduce this scheme as more and more people start heading back to offices and the busy Christmas shopping period gets underway.”

“Park and ride takes all the hassle out of the daily journey to work. It helps to cut congestion, lower emissions and improve air quality, which is vital for the fight against climate change.”
