Network Rail teams will start work on the footbridge at Welwyn Garden City from Saturday the 20th of November and will see temporary closures put in place on the stairs to and from Hydeway.
Last year Network Rail teams carried out improvement work to strengthen the footbridge which included repairs, the latticework repainted and the installation of new lighting.
This year’s work will see repairs to the steelwork under the bridge which will strengthen it even further and will see that the footbridge remains fit for use for years to come.
For the work to be carried out as safely as possible, the stairs to and from Hydeway will need to be temporarily closed from 06:00am until 04:30am on the following dates:
- Saturday the 20th until Monday the 22nd of November
- Saturday the 27th until Monday the 29th of November
- Saturday the 4th until Monday the 6th of December
- Saturday the 11th until Monday the 13th of December
- Saturday the 18th until Monday the 20th of December
- Wednesday the 29th until Friday the 31st of January 2022
During the times of temporary closure, pedestrians who need to enter or exit the station from Hydeway will have to walk via Bridge Road, using the main station entrance in the shopping centre which will still have access to the footbridge and platforms.
Rail services will not be affected by this work.
Sarah Reid, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route, said: “We’ve already made major improvements to the footbridge at Welwyn Garden City station and this latest stage of work will make sure it can connect people between the town centre, the railway station and east Welwyn Garden City for years to come.
“The complex project can only be completed safely when the stairs leading to Hydeway are closed, which is why temporary weekend closures are in place. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes and we’d like to thank passengers and people in the community for their patience.”
Jenny Saunders, Customer Services Director for Great Northern, said: “We can reassure our customers that this work by our partners at Network Rail won’t affect rail services in any way. However, it may take you longer to get into the station if you normally use the footbridge from Hydeway on the east side of the tracks, so please allow extra time.”

Maybe add a new bay platform at Welwyn Garden City just like at Stevenage so that Great Northern Class 717s can terminate at Welwyn Garden City to & from Moorgate via New Southgate.
