In a creative and innovative community project, students from Woodrush High School in Wythall, Worcestershire have created their own Station Adoption Group at Wythall railway station and are working on a project intended to enrich the experience of passengers travelling by rail, and at the same time promote railway safety.
Alongside the planting of flowers and shrubs, the students are working on two artworks which will eventually be displayed on the internal walls of the platform shelters and will celebrate elements of
the area’s history.
The school team of 8 students and 2 staff members have been working with the Friends of the Shakespeare Line volunteers and have managed to get their creative project funded by a West Midlands Railway‘s Your Community, Your Fund grant which currently supports 21 community projects.
The inspiring project is an excellent way to bring differing generations together whilst building community pride by supporting their local area.
The School Station Adopters also have exciting future plans which include the installation of large circular planters, the maintenance of hedges, the creation of a bug garden and hotel which will attract insects and wildlife. Also planned is the planting of further evergreen shrubs along the banks and walkways.
