Another week, and another book review, this time from Amberley Publishing. Written by Colin J. Howat, this pictorial book shows a plethora of images showing the Class 20 locomotives throughout Scotland.

Published in the usual Amberley handy size of 16.5 x 23.5 cm, the book has almost 100 pages. The book is available from Amberley Publishing for around £14, and on Amazon for £10.99 (at the time of writing).

The Class 20 locomotives once operated throughout Scotland and were introduced in the late 1950s. Many locations are featured in the book, which looks at the Class 20s from the BR era up to recent freight operations.

The book has a 8-page introduction looking at the history of the locos and where they were introduced.

Following the introduction, the rest of the book is comprised of the popular pictures and captions format with a mixture of both colour and black and white images.

It is interesting to see the variety of duties that the Class 20s undertook, with freight operations, shunting duties, track maintenance and passenger specials all featuring in the photographs.

We did notice that in our copy of the book that some of the images appear a little grainy compared to what we are used to seeing in books, but you have to remember that some of these images were taken over 40 years ago.

This book is a must for anyone with an interest in the Class 20s, or indeed anyone with an interest in the how the railways once were in Scotland.
