Over the past 12 months, Northern has supported hundreds of 16 to 17-year-olds to take part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) which offers the chance to take part in volunteering, to empower young people and help them learn confidence-building life skills.
A longstanding relationship between Northern and NCS has seen young people connected to their local communities with the support of the rail industry.
2021 theme at NCS is ‘No. We. Can.’ which is a phrase intended for those taking part to use if they ever feel overwhelmed.
Examples of projects this year have seen the refurbishment of the garden at Driffield station and the creation of a mural at Beverley station. Young people at Bradford City Football Club Community Foundation have also supported refugees find their way around Bradford using public transport networks.
Community groups and charities such as Huddersfield Town Foundation, Rotherham United Football Club, Tiger’s Trust and Yorkshire Cricket Foundation have worked with Northern to bring support and free travel to those taking part in the NCS scheme.
Tony Baxter, Regional Director at Northern said: “For many of the young people involved in NCS, this was the first time they had used public transport and we are pleased to be able to encourage and empower the next generation to use the railway to access their communities and to make a difference.
“We’re pleased to be able to support NCS and the work they do and to deliver such a wide-ranging positive impact for the north of England.”
Dom Stingas Paczko, Head of NCS at the EFL Trust, said: “We really value the partnership with Northern.
“Not only does it provide vital transport links to enable young people to participate in this life-changing programme, it also supports our participants whilst on NCS to develop key life skills, especially those valued by employers.”
