A major step in the £20m Reston Station redevelopment has been achieved by Network Rail as a footbridge crossing the East Coast Mainline is now installed
The work was undertaken by contractor Bam Nuttall and took place on the weekend of the 25th and 26th of September whilst the line was closed for an extended period to allow teams to work right through the 54-hour window, allowing the bridge sections to be lifted in safely by crane.
All together, six sections make up the main framework of the steel bridge with lift-towers being positioned beside it. The main bridge space was the largest section to be installed at 16 metres long and 6.5m in width and weighing in at more than 28 tonnes.
The bridge sections were made up of the main, upper and lower spans along with two lift shafts and were delivered to the site using a police escort from Coatbridge via the M8 and A1 before winding through the narrow streets of Reston village.
Along with the installation of the bridgework, an upgrade to the overhead lines was carried out at the new station, making the most of the access time available on the line.
The Reston Station Redevelopment project will also see the building of a two-platform station on the East Coast Mainline and will include car parking with 70 spaces along with a new access road. The station will be fully accessible with the new lifts and footbridge making the connection to both platforms.
The station will see trains calling to the Borders village for the first time in over 50 years.
Lisa McKenna, Network Rail project manager for the Reston station development said: “Installation of the footbridge marks a major milestone for the project’s delivery and we are grateful to the team at Reston for completing this challenging element of the project safely and efficiently.
“The bridge and lifts will help deliver easy local access to East Coast Mainline services and will make this area more attractive for inward investment and housing growth, which will both support local communities and the economy.
“Work will now continue, both on the bridge and the wider station development, which will help open Reston to new opportunities and transform this community.”
Jerry Dickson, Operations Manager, BAM Nuttall, said: “We’re delighted to be underway in creating another brand new station for Scotland’s Railway. BAM has a proud history in delivering new rail infrastructure in the Scottish Borders and we’re looking forward to helping even more of the region to access rail transport.”

Cue a visit in the near future by Geoff Marshall (to keep all the stations up to date)
Will it be mantained by Network Rail and managed by London North Eastern Railway, ScotRail or Transpennine Express.
This is a great highlight…. Reston (on the East Coast Mainline) is certainly brought into the 21st Century.
