Transpennine Express has completed improvements at railway station.

The station has now been officially opened by Councillor Janet Frank, who is Chair of Ryedale District Council. The make-over reveals a new ticket office, upgraded waiting room which now features charging points, accessible unisex toilets and also a free drinking water fountain.

The new toilet will be an extremely welcome addition for customers as it is the first time in more than 40 years that the station has had toilets inside the station.  A new water fountain will also mean that people can access free drinking water which will *help the environment as customer may come to use less plastic bottles, especially as it is expected that around 50% of passengers will use the facility. The water fountain is located at an accessible height for all and is automatic for ease of use.

It is hoped that the improvements will be welcomed by members of the public returning to rail following the pandemic and will be a positive for those travelling to see friends and family.

The investment for the upgrade has been provided by ‘s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund, which is available for projects which will bring benefits for communities in the North of England and also into Scotland. £5K has also been contributed by Ryedale District Council under their infrastructure and connectivity improvement plan for Malton and Norton.

The improvement works have been undertaken by TMT Group and the overall project managed by Vextrix.

Councillor Janet Frank, Chair of Ryedale District Council, said: “Ryedale District Council is really pleased to have been able to contribute towards this project to provide improved customer facilities at Malton Station. It will make a big difference to rail users. We are continuing to work with partners, including TransPennine Express, to develop improvements to infrastructure and connectivity in Malton and Norton. Making public transport more attractive and convenient is an essential part of this wider programme to address connectivity, congestion, and air quality issues. This is particularly important given the challenges of climate change and the need to transition to a carbon neutral economy.”

Mike Drewery, Group Station Manager for the North East at TransPennine Express said: “These improvements have completely transformed the station and are fantastic news for customers. We want our customers to enjoy these brand-new facilities at Malton, and from a sustainability point of view, the water fountain will be a great utility for customers to use. TransPennine Express would like to thank all rail customers for their patience and understanding while the ticket office was previously closed.”
