ScotRail have launched a new competition for schools, and the innovative approach hopes to get school children involved in generating different ideas to get more people and businesses back to using the railway network once again.
Scotland has 5,052 schools, and all have been invited to get involved with the competition to make a one minute advert or a design for a large scale poster that encourages rail travel.
The competition has prizes for two primary winners and two secondary winners, each receiving £2,500 for new tech equipment in their school.
The winning adverts or posters will be used in a promotion that will run up to COP26, which will be held in Glasgow later during 2021. The work will be featured across Scottish stations and also on social media.
Along with winning the chance to get new tech for their schools, winners will also be asked for their thoughts and ideas on the railways anti-trespass campaigns, which are set to be released in 2022. The key focus of the vital safety campaign will be both children and young people, so input from the winners really could make a difference.
Travelling by rail is the greenest form of public transportation in Scotland and targets have been set to decarbonise passenger journeys by 2035.
Railways are vital to moving both people and freight throughout Scotland, travelling by rail is also a positive approach in reducing the number of private and commercial vehicles on the country’s roads over the coming years.
The closing date for entries is the 20th of September.

Alex Hynes, managing director of Scotland’s Railway, said: “The railway plays an important part in making Scotland greener.
“We want our young people to help us showcase what Scotland’s Railway is great at doing – reducing our impact on the environment by getting more people, and goods, out of their vehicles.
“We’re decarbonising Scotland’s Railway – investing in more electrification and new greener trains – and we hope this competition will help highlight the positive contribution we make to Scotland’s communities, economy and environment.”
