The public are being asked to give feedback on plans by to fully close a footpath level crossing in Copmanthorpe.

Major improvement work is taking place between York and Church Fenton and will allow trains to travel at up to 125mph.

Whilst trains currently run on two of the four train lines through Copmanthorpe village at up to 125mph, the other two lines run between York and Leeds at up to 100mph – though upgrade work will allow these to be upgraded to an allowable 125mph.

The work, as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade, will bring more capacity for trains and faster journeys for passengers.

Network Rail is looking at options to fully close Copmanthorpe level crossing to improve safety in the area.

Two options have been proposed and residents are being asked to share their views:

  • Divert people to the existing Temple Lane Bridge, with plans to install another footpath over the bridge
  • Build a new stepped footbridge at York Field Lane.

The virtual consultation will run until Friday 1st October, people can share their views on the Network Rail website.

Two live chat sessions will also run where people can chat to the Network Rail team and ask any questions they have. These will run on:

  • Tuesday 28 September, 12:00 – 13:00
  • Wednesday 29 September, 18:00 – 19:00

Stephen Wright, Senior Sponsor for Network Rail’s Transpennine Route Upgrade, said: “We really want people in Copmanthorpe to share their views on the planned closure of the level crossing and let us know what they think of our two proposed options. This will allow us to find the best option to maintain safe access over the railway and meet the needs of the community.

“As we continue to upgrade the railway to bring faster, more reliable journeys, the safety of passengers, members of the public and our workers remains our priority. Both options would improve safety by separating pedestrians and the operating railway, and we look forward to providing this improvement.”

  1. At Colton Junction. Will there be a new flyover to be built to allow trains to cross over the ECML or a new flyover for trains coming from London and Doncaster and to relieve the bottleneck. As what’s happening at Werrington Junction in Peterborough.
