A new preservation group, The Clacton Express Preservation Group has announced that they have launched a JustGiving page, aiming to raise, through donations, the sum required to save an at-risk Class 309 electric train.
The Clacton Express Preservation Group wants to purchase, restore and run BR Class 309 No. 309624, which is currently running as 960102 from its Railtrack operation days.
309624 is currently residing at the Lavender Line which is in East Sussex but is now up for sale.
Whilst a final sale price is being negotiated, the JustGiving page has been set at £35,000 as a target. If the unit is purchased for less than this, then the remaining money will be put into the restoration cost.
Brad Wright, CEPG Chairman, told RailAdvent “We are The CEPG, a new group with a simple goal: secure the purchase, and eventual restoration of Class 309 “Clacton” EMU, No. 309 624. Which is currently up for sale and at risk of being broken for spare parts. Lets save a 309!”
Donations are gathering momentum, with around £635 raised at the time of writing. If you would like to donate, please visit The Clacton Express Preservation Group JustGiving Page.
