Alstom has announced that it has handed over the 1st of 26 locomotives to Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları (TCDD).
The contract to build 26 locomotives with ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 1 and 2 also looks to see signalling and communication systems installed around 260km east of Ankara to Balıkesir.
The new system will allow TCDD to manage its rail services on the Eskişehir-Balıkesir line efficiently and will also allow the lines capacity to be increased.
The EKB Project includes trackside modernisation covering design, manufacture and supply of the trackside thanks to Alstom‘s signalling system, Atlas.
Mama Sougoufara, Alstom MENAT and Turkey Managing Director, said: “As a long-term partner, we are dedicated to continue supporting TCDD in their mission to enhance their railway technology and improve the line’s safety and capacity. With the new ETCS on-board, the locomotives will provide an advanced level of security beyond the capabilities of the legacy Automatic Train Protection systems (ATP). It will also reduce the total operating cost of EKB line, and it will standardize the line-length and on-board equipment while providing common communication between countries. Indeed, we are very proud of what we have achieved together with TCDD,”

To be clear, these are NOT new locomotives being delivered, but rather existing class DE33 locomotives owned by TCDD that have been equipped with ETCS equipment.
