Steam locomotive set to visit Cardiff this Wednesday

A steam locomotive from the pool will be back in steam on the mainline and will be in and around Shrewsbury on Wednesday 11th August 2021.

RailAdvent is awaiting confirmation on which locomotive will haul this Wednesday’s tour.

The locomotive is on a special railtour on Wednesday with the steam locomotive hauling The Welsh Marches Express. The tour sees the steam locomotive steam through Shrewsbury and Hereford on its way to Cardiff Central.

The railtour will depart Wigan North Western behind diesel locomotives at 05:26 and will pass through St Helens Central (05:42), Huyton (05:54), Broad Green (06:01), Liverpool Lime Street (06:19), Liverpool South Parkway (06:47), Runcorn (07:00), Hartford (07:18) and Crewe at 07:42, where the steam locomotive is attached.

The railtour will then leave Crewe at 08:17, and will then pass through Wrenbury (08:30), Shrewsbury (08:59), Craven Arms (09:34), Hereford (10:12), Abergavenny (11:27), Newport (12:17) and Cardiff Central at 12:42.

On the return trip, the steam locomotive will depart Cardiff Central at 15:20, and will then pass through Newport (15:41), Abergavenny (16:11), Hereford (16:40), Leominster (17:50), Craven Arms (18:10), Shrewsbury (18:42), Wem (19:00), Nantwich (19:21) and Crewe at 19:30.

The steam locomotive is detached at Crewe, and the diesels will take over. Departing Crewe at 20:02, the train will pass through Hartford (20:24), Runcorn (20:41), Liverpool South Parkway (20:52), Liverpool Lime Street (21:05), Broad Green (21:29), Huyton (21:35), St Helens Central (21:48) and Wigan North Western at 22:11.

      Thanks for the feedback. The piece was published on Tuesday at 16:42, so the day before the actual tour.

      Everything stays on the website for historical purposes, where did you find out about it 2 days after the event?
