Heritage Boiler Steam Services Ltd (HBSS) has published an update on the current boilers they are restoring and overhauling at their site in Liverpool.

Southern Railway Schools Class No.928 “Stowe” – owned by the Maunsell Locomotive Society

Recent work on 928 has seen the team at HBSS repairing and trialling sections of the copper firebox.

The tube plate has been cut in half, with the top half (where the tubes are fitted into) to be reused and the bottom half replaced.

The new bottom half has been formed and attached to the top half. Both sides and the top of the firebox have been set up around a jig to align the firebox up correctly.

Great Western Railway (GWR) 4200 Class No. 4253 – owned by The

Work continues on repairing the foundation ring, with the team cleaning up the faces.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) N7 Class No. 69621 – based at the East Anglian Railway Museum

Disassembly of the boiler continues at HBSS, with the internal components removed, followed by separating the boiler barrel from the firebox.

Both the sling stay brackets and transverse stay brackets have been removed, with the next stage to clean them.

Once these components and the boiler have been prepared, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) will take place to determine the work needed to overhaul the boiler.
