Network Rail are to carry out track upgrade work in over the bank holiday weekend.

The works will bring smoother, more reliable journeys with less need for future maintenance, with the majority of the work set to take place through the night and will mean less disruption as no trains are running during this time, but will bring some service changes to LNER services during the day.

LNER Service Changes on Saturday the 28th of August 2021:

  • 19:45 Leeds to London King’s Cross service will not run
  • 20:30 London King’s Cross to Leeds service will not run
  • 21:00 London King’s Cross to Newcastle service will leave earlier than usual and will be diverted, creating longer journey times than usual
  • 22:00 London King’s Cross to Leeds service will leave earlier than usual with longer journey times.

During the work, engineers will lift and replace the track between Grantham and Claypole level crossing close to Newark-on-Trent.

During the work, the ballast, which are the stones that support the rails, will also be replaced along with the wooden sleepers.

has planned work taking place during the bank holiday weekend very carefully and has a huge 95% of the UK network open for business as usual, allowing passengers to get out and about, reconnecting with family and friends and visiting their favourite holiday locations.

Passengers are advised to wear a face covering in busy indoor locations unless exempt as advised by the government guidelines. The public can feel confident about travelling by rail as trains feature good ventilation systems with enhanced cleaning in place and improved information about travelling during quieter times.

Paul Rutter, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route, said: “This vital work to upgrade the track in Grantham will bring smoother, more reliable services for passengers. We’re carrying out these improvements now to reduce the amount of maintenance and repair work required in future, helping to prevent disruption to services.

“As we welcome passengers back to the railway, the vast majority of services are running as normal. We’re advising people to check their journey and allow plenty of time.”
