The Carmyllie Pilot Company Ltd has confirmed that their locomotive, London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Ivatt 2 Class (2-6-0) No. 46464 has been re-wheeled at Aviemore on the Strathspey Railway.
A key milestone in the project, the team used lifts at Aviemore Locomotive Shed to lower the frame, with cab, smokebox and cylinders attached, onto the three coupled wheelsets.
A lot of preparation work was needed, such as refitting the six axle boxes, followed by lining up the wheelsets below.
A diesel shunter pulled the frame, sitting on bogies, out of the main shed and into the other shed that has lifting equipment. Once lowered onto the wheelsets, the team checked 46464 over to ensure the frame was sitting correctly.
After being moved by the shunter, with no major issues, the locomotive was returned to the main shed where it is now reunited with its tender.
Focus now can be turned to further reassembly work on the engine.
