Families and enthusiasts planning what to do this summer can visit Locomotion Shildon and see world-famous steam locomotive, Flying Scotsman, all for free.

60103 Flying Scotsman will be on display at Locomotion from the 28th of July until the 17th of August.

The A3 locomotive will be positioned outside the main visitor hall, allowing people to get up close with Flying Scotsman and take photos of the nameplate.

This visit was originally planned for 2020, but was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Locomotion is open daily from 10:30 until 16:00 and is free to attend, but online booking is required to comply with NHS Test and Trace.

Sarah Price, Head of Locomotion, said: “It is really positive to see Flying Scotsman returning to Shildon for the first time since 2019 after what has been a really difficult year for everyone. I look forward to welcoming people to the museum in what should be a great family day out and the only chance to see Flying Scotsman up close in the North East.”

Flying Scotsman was built in Doncaster in 1923 to operate services between London and Edinburgh and was the first locomotive to travel at 100mph.

Locomotion visitors will be able to learn more about Flying Scotsman in a series of talks by experts, including the free presentation: Flying Scotsman – how good is it?
