LNER A1 No. 60163 Tornado, the first new-build steam locomotive built in Britain for the mainline since 1960, hauled the Northern Belle on Monday to mark the 90th anniversary of the first Bournemouth Belle Pullman on July 5th, 1931.

However, unlike the original Bournemouth Belle, Tornado departed London Victoria rather than London Waterloo and picked up extra passengers at Woking.

The trip was a sell-out tour and went like clockwork, with passengers enjoying champagne, smoked salmon and a five-course dinner.

One passenger remarked: “It wasn’t hard to imagine being back in those luxuriously decadent days of the 1930s.

“I was half-expecting to see Hedy Lamarr come strolling through the carriage on the arm of some cigar-smoking Hollywood mogul!”

The Northern Belle still has a number of steam-hauled trips in the Summer using LMS 6201 Princess Elizabeth, which has been pressed into service to haul the train over the Settle to Carlisle line.
