London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has launched a new poster competition that they are encouraging children and young people to take part in.

LNER wants the posters to capture their visions of eco-friendly travel through inspiring art. The main idea is to show the importance of sustainable travel, with the winning poster entries brightening up stations and concourse ready for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) later on in the year.

The conference is held in November and LNER is asking 7-17-year-olds to think about what sustainable travel and the environment means to them.

The world’s eyes will be set on the UK, and LNER wants to welcome delegates in style and display the importance of taking action against climate change and the effect that has on children and young people across the country.

The poster competition has two age categories and criteria:

• Ages 7 to 11 for posters with a theme of ‘the eco-friendly train’
• Ages 12 to 17 with a focus on ‘connecting low carbon rail with your environment or community and public transport’.

Two entries from each group will be selected and will receive a printed version of their designs, a photo opportunity alongside an Azuma, a £50 prize, a family pass to use on the LNER services, and an LNER goodie bag containing limited edition LNER merchandise. Five runners up in both categories will also receive a goodie bag.

Open to UK residents only, the entries are also encouraged from those living around the East Coast Main Line. The deadline is noon on the 15th September 2021, with the winners being contacted no later than the 30th September 2021.

Warrick Dent, Director of Safety and Operations at LNER, said: “Rail is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of travelling to COP26, and we know climate change and sustainability will undoubtedly be at the forefront of the minds of everyone taking part.

“This new poster competition seeks to exercise the creative minds of children and young people across the country and populate our stations with colourful and engaging imagery to provide a different view of the green credentials of rail and the importance of taking action against climate change.”
