The signalling team at Colas Rail UK has done an incredible job by completing the rapid replacement of a damaged signal just 11 weeks from winning the contract for the work.
Signal DM203A, which is located close to Starcross Station in Devon, was hit by a boat during bad weather which meant that a temporary signal provision had to be installed by Network Rail to keep trains on the move but at a reduced speed.
Colas Rail UK won the contract when working as part of the Western Signalling and Telecomms Framework, which is part of their ongoing work with the Westbury & Exeter Life Extension Scheme. It was vital that the work was completed as soon as possible to allow full line speed on the route once again.
The contract was granted on Wednesday the 14th of April 2021 and Colas Rail UK worked along with delivery and design partners Readypower-Terrawise & Richter Associates to get the best outcome and keep a dedicated focus for the safe installation and maintenance of the signal.
The design process involved in-depth considerations of the various options available to find the best possible solution for the projects final outcome. Safe construction and on-site safety for future teams working on-site for maintenance was a vital factor. The signals position along a sea wall above the River Exe estuary provided an unusual aspect for the projects complex safety requirements.
The Colas Rail UK team put in a Dorman ILS folding signal, which removed the need to work at height. The signal also features a combined GRP walkway and handrail which was installed without the need for the team to work on the face of the sea wall.
The signal was installed and commissioned successfully into usage on Sunday the 27th of June 2021 with all work taking place over just 3 weekends with no disruption to services.
Network Rail’s Construction Manager, Karl Norman said: “It’s great to see that Colas Rail UK staff had thought outside the box on the installation and commissioning of DM203A. The installation of a maintainable folding signal and new GRP walkway, thus providing a maintainable area and handrail in one solution. Good work!”
